Type Locality and Naming

The group was named by the Party of Regional Geological Survey, the Xinjiang Bureau of Geology in 1976 and published by the Compiling Group of Regional Stratigraphical Scale, the Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu (1981). The type section is located at Wenquangou in the upper reaches of Yarkant River in Yecheng (Kargilik) County, Xinjiang. The reference section is in the upper reaches of Yarkant River, Yecheng, Xinjiang.

Synonym: (温泉沟群)


Lithology and Thickness

It consists of purplish red, gray and black limestone, marl and sandstone. The group is 2250 m in thickness,

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is disconformably underlain by the Ordovician.

Upper contact

The group is disconformably overlain by the Devonian or the Upper Carboniferous (regionally, the next younger unit is the Talong Gr of lower Carboniferous).

Regional extent

In west, the group records 4316 m thick at Dabuda in Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County and 2944-4687 m thick in the upper reaches of Yarkant River, and accounts 1058-2200 m in incomplete thickness eastwards at Kangxiwar, where the group consists of gray, light gray, gray green schistose siltstone, micritic sandstone, calcareous slate, phyllite, etc.

Fossils

The upper part yields trilobite Encrinuroides meijiangensis; coral Favosites sp. and cephalopod? Polygramoceras sp.
